Overview

Larry W. Mathieson (Chief of Police, Retired) is a 35 year veteran of law enforcement, having served for 25 years with Miami-Dade County, Florida, retiring honorably from that agency at the rank of Major.   He was then applied for and was selected as the Chief of Police of the City of Ormond Beach, Florida.  During his 9 amd 1/2 year tenure with that agency, he and his staff were successful in diversifying the workforce, building community support for Community Policing and developing members of staff through advanced training and education programs.  He left his position as Chief in 2006 to form Mathieson Consulting LLC.

Education and Training

He has been a law enforcement instructor and featured speaker for over 30 years, and has presented to organizations across the country on topics ranging from promotional assessment centers to organizational excellence, supervisory skill development, leadership and law enforcement ethics. Currently he is a lecturer/consultant for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) focusing on supervision and leadership programs and was featured in the September 2008 issue of IACP magazine as one of their “Best Instructors” nationally. Over the past two years, he has provided instruction for over 100 agencies in cities throughout the country.

In February of 2011, he received his Facilitator Certification in Diversity Centered Leadership through Franklin Covey and the Greenville, South Carolina Community Policing Institute.  In this capacity, he facilitates Diversity Centered Leadership Seminars for law enforcement agencies throughout the Southeast United States. Other Franklin Covey classes Mr. Mathieson is certified to deliver include Law Enforcement at the Speed of Trust and the Nobility of Policing.

Chief Mathieson has a Master’s Degree from the University of Miami in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree from Florida Atlantic University in Social Science. He is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS). Chief Mathieson has held leadership positions in law enforcement professional associations throughout the state of Florida. Prior to his retirement, he held the position of First Vice President of the Florida Police Chiefs Association.  Other posts he has held included President of the Volusia-Flagler Police Chiefs Association and Chairman of the Region VII Law Enforcement Training Council for the state of Florida.

Assessment Center Credentials

He is a recognized expert in the field of Promotional Assessment Centers for law enforcement.  He has successfully competed in the process for promotion to Captain in the Miami-Dade Police Department, finishing first on that promotional list.  Upon applying for the position of Chief with the Ormond Beach Police Department,  he achieved one of the highest scores ever recorded on a nationally administered assessment instrument.   He has also served as a subject matter expert and assisted in the development of job descriptions and job task analysis for the Miami-Dade Police Department for the positions of Sergeant and Lieutenant.  Lastly, he has worked as an Assessor and has developed Assessment Center based promotional processes for agencies within the state of Florida.

He has worked with hundreds of candidates from the Jacksonville Sheriff's office for over 30 years, helping them to achieve their career promotional objectives.  The ranks of that agency are replete with success stories of officers who have climbed the promotional ladder to success.
